Cloud computing and cloud hosting is becoming a more mature and trusted platform.
Last year we published cloud-computing-advantages-and-disadvantages which was, and still is, one of the most popular pages within our news items.
One of the major disadvantages of entering the cloud is security, and this was highlighted in the above, but as a technology architect from Royal Mail pointed out: "If you look at most cloud computing solutions they are a lot more secure than your internal systems". This is so true for almost all organisations. How often have you left data accessible on your desk? It only takes one person interested in that data to walk by at the right time for it to be compromised.
All good datacentres are far more secure than a standard office, and anyone considering putting all their data on the server located in the office should think again.
Even if your data is secure within a good datacentre it could still be compromised online. To protect against online attacks you must ensure the cloud is kept uptodate and secure. For this reason when entering the cloud it would be prudent to use a cloud provider which is compliant with the Cloud Controls Matrix, see: http://www.cloudsecurityalliance.org/pr20100427.html
Get the security right and the cloud could become the de-facto hosting platform, offering high failover reliability with burstability, and topped off with the ability to scale up and down when the requirements arise.
We will be offering Cloud hosting as one of our services soon.
