DNS - domain name system FAQ

Domains: DNS - FAQs: Can we test our DNS before transferring to you?
Yes you can test your DNS prior to changing the nameservers.
If you take the example Mail (MX) Records below:

Prefix TTL Distance Value
  default 0 mail.the--domain.gov.uk.

Web Site (A & CNAME) Records

Prefix TTL Type Value
mail default A 1.1.1.1

Replace the following with your own details:

mail.the--domain.gov.uk. is the hostname to point to (note the period [dot] at the end, this is a requirement).
1.1.1.1 is the ip address of the server to send the mail to.

To test the DNS, which is very useful prior to changing the nameservers:

Open a command prompt and type:

nslookup
server _IP_
set domain=_YOUR_DOMAIN_

(where _YOUR_DOMAIN_ the domain name being tested, and _IP_ is the ip address of the server where the DNS records are stored)

then to test a new sub-domain type in its name, ie. mail (in this case), and it will reply with the new record if all is well.

For more details see the videos on seiretto.com/domains/dns/testing/

What should the TTL be set to for testing?

You can set this to 30 minutes (1800) or even lower for testing.  However, this runs the risk of failing if our DNS is down for greater than the period set. This does not happen very often, but it is a potential risk you should be aware of.  Once testing is complete you should set the TTL to a safer lever such as 4 hours (14400) or greater.
